Mediterranean cruises

Western weeks from Barcelona and Rome, eastern weeks from Athens.

Port-intensive

A port almost every day, with the ship as the hotel between cities.

Mediterranean cruises are city hops. A western week from Barcelona often touches Palma, Marseille or the French coast, and an Italian port such as Livorno or Civitavecchia. A week from Rome can run west toward Spain or south toward Sicily and Malta. Eastern weeks from Athens (Piraeus) are built around the Cyclades and a mainland call such as Kusadasi.

You should expect a port nearly every morning and a late sail-away. That is the appeal, and it is also why this region tires people who wanted sea days. If you want two or three quiet days on the ship, say so before you fall in love with a seven-port route.

When these sailings run

May, June, September, and October are the comfortable months for walking stone streets. July and August are hotter, more crowded, and still the peak of the cruise calendar. April can be lovely and occasionally wet.

Winter Mediterranean cruises exist on some lines and are a different product: fewer ships, rougher seas, and some seasonal ports closed. Our samples stay inside the main season.

  • BarcelonaA major turnaround port. The ship is on the city’s seafront, not an hour inland.
  • Rome via CivitavecchiaThe port is not in Rome. Plan a real transfer, or treat the call as the coast rather than the Colosseum.
  • Athens via PiraeusThe practical start for the Greek islands. Central Athens is a transfer, not a walk off the gangway.
  • Santorini and MykonosThe calls that fill eastern weeks. Santorini is often a tender, and the cable car or a boat ride is part of the day.

Questions about Mediterranean

Should I add hotel nights in the embarkation city?

Usually yes, at least the night before. A missed flight on embarkation morning is the expensive way to start. We do not book those hotels on this form.

Is a week enough for both Italy and Greece?

A single week that tries to do both will skip more than it shows. Pick a western sample or an eastern one unless you have ten nights or more.

Are the sample ports confirmed calls?

No. They are typical calls for that pattern so you can describe the trip you want. A real schedule comes later, from a planner, and it can differ.
