Northern Europe photos
Fjords and capitals
Two programs that share a season and should not be booked as if they were the same cruise.
Northern Europe splits cleanly in our samples. Baltic weeks leave Copenhagen or Amsterdam for a string of capitals: Oslo, Stockholm, Helsinki, Tallinn, and a German call such as Warnemunde. Fjord weeks leave Amsterdam or Copenhagen for the Norwegian coast: Bergen, Flam, Geiranger, and the long scenic inlets between them.
The Baltic trip is about cities and daylight. The fjord trip is about the water and the mountains, closer in spirit to Alaska than to a Mediterranean city hop. Tell a planner which of those you mean. “Northern Europe” alone is too broad to price or to plan.
When these sailings run
The season runs about May through September. June has the longest evenings, which matters in the Baltic when you are in port until late. July and August are the warmest and the most crowded in Bergen and the capital cities.
Weather is part of the product. A fjord day in low cloud is still a fjord day, and it is not a failure of the itinerary. Pack a waterproof layer even in the sample “best” months.
- CopenhagenThe most useful homeport in our Baltic samples, with ships either nearer the center or at the Oceankaj piers to the north.
- Norwegian fjordsBergen, Flam, and Geiranger are the names to listen for. Some arrivals are tender days in narrow water.
- Stockholm and TallinnA typical Baltic pair: one long city day, one compact old town.
- AmsterdamA second homeport in our list. Smaller ships may use the city terminal; larger ships often use IJmuiden.

Questions about Northern Europe
Baltic or fjords if I have one week?
Choose fjords if the landscape is the reason you are going. Choose the Baltic if you want several capital cities and do not mind a faster pace ashore.
Do ships dock in central Copenhagen?
Some do, and some use Oceankaj, which needs a transfer. The pier is assigned per sailing, so the sample page does not pretend every ship shares one dock.
Is this a river cruise?
No. These samples are ocean ships on the Baltic and the Norwegian coast. River ships are a separate way of traveling and are not in this catalog.
